Global maps

Post by admin »

Global maps of Mars are generally made from imaging and other data obtained from spacecraft in orbit around Mars, such as the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter. Here are some examples in order of difficulty:
  • Google Mars -- Good for casual browsing.
  • HiRISE -- Locate and browse highest-resolution (~15 cm/pixel) orbital images of Mars. Allows users to suggest new observations.
  • Mars Orbital Data Explorer -- Powerful online browser with lots of datasets. Some familiarity with Mars orbiters and their instruments is assumed.
  • JMARS -- Research-grade downloadable software supporting lots of datasets and advanced functionality such as 3D views.
Orbital datasets, in conjunction with ground truth from landers and rovers, are also used to make higher-order products, such as the Geologic Map of Mars and map of water ice on Mars.
